February 2011
M4 Christchurch Overbridge to Brynglas Tunnels Concrete Barrier

Work will start on the 29th January 2011 for approximately 4 months, on a £2.4m scheme to continue the improvements to the safety barriers and street lighting in the central reservation on the M4 motorway between the Christchurch Overbridge and the Brynglas Tunnels. The approximate length of new barrier will be 3 km and there will be 102 new lighting columns installed to current design and lighting standards. This scheme is the progression of the recently constructed concrete barriers in the central reservation in the area between Junctions 24 and 28 of the M4 motorway.
This scheme is the final phase of the concrete barrier renewal works in the area and these works will be taking place at the same time as the concrete barrier scheme between Junctions 27 to 28. The work between Junctions 27 to 28 has been hampered by the recent cold weather and snow, but the contractor is working additional shifts to meet the programme completion date in mid February 2011.
The works are required due to the current age and condition of the central reserve safety barriers and lighting columns. The new concrete barrier will provide the additional safety requirements of current day standards.
The mandatory 50 mph speed limit due to the condition of the central reserve safety barrier and for safety purposes will continue to be in operation during the works. Following the completion of the scheme the mandatory 50mph speed limit is to be reviewed and the recently constructed Variable Speed Limit will become operational.
The South Wales Trunk Road Agency will be managing the works as Agents to the Welsh Government. The main contractor will be Alun Griffiths Contractors Limited and Capita Symonds, as Consulting Engineer, will supervise the works.
This is a busy section of the motorway and there is likely to be some disruption to road users whilst the works are in progress. Traffic management will be in place to protect the workforce, motorists and control the flow of traffic, and every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience to road users, businesses and residents.
