Tarmac Limited
National Contracting

Operating since 1903, Tarmac Limited is the foremost quarry products company in the UK, supplying and laying aggregates, asphalt and ready mixed concrete to the construction industry.

Tarmac Limited National Contracting is the construction and contracting arm of Tarmac, and as the largest surfacing contractor in the UK, is able to offer a contracting service for all aspects of highway construction and maintenance backed up by the technical and commercial strength of a division employing over 1100 staff and operatives and with a turnover in 2011 of in excess of £334m.

The National Contracting office in South Wales, located in Hendy, Pontyclun, is one of 14 strategically located contracting offices in the UK. In addition to the Contracting office at Hendy, Tarmac also has a number of regional offices and production facilities located across the South Wales Trunk Road Agent (SWTRA) area. Having been a member of the SWTRA supply chain partnership since it's inception in 2006, Tarmac Limited National Contracting have completed over 140 schemes which, in addition to routine carriageway surfacing works, have included many major highway improvement and reconstruction schemes such as:

  • A40 The Kell, Haverfordwest
     - Extensive civil engineering works for 850m bypass scheme
  • A483 Penybanc - Tycroes
     - Full carriageway reconstruction and surfacing
  • A48 Llanddarog Street Lighting
     - Replacement lighting scheme on busy junction
  • Fishguard town centre
     - Enhancement scheme for town centre footways and roads
  • A40 Pensarn Roundabout
     - Traffic light installation with major civils works and surfacing
  • A48 Pont Abraham - Cross Hands
     - Closure of right turns and carriageway resurfacing.

Key factors in the successful delivery of all schemes, which have ranged from minor improvement works to motorway reconstruction with associated traffic management and diversion routes, has been Tarmac's ability to undertake the works safely whilst minimising disruption and delays to all road users, in particular avoiding disruption to holiday traffic using the busy motorway and trunk road routes to West Wales.

Whilst a large part of this success is attributable to the extensive in-house employees, plant and material resources Tarmac have available in South Wales, Tarmac also utilises many locally based suppliers for specialist contracting services, providing opportunities for SMEs in the region and contributing to the local economy. All National Contracting's operations are fully accredited to BS EN ISO 9001: 2008 and National Highway Sector Scheme 16, together with similarly accredited systems for Environmental Management and Health & Safety.

A ready supply of materials direct from Tarmac quarries and asphalt plants, all of which also operate accredited quality management systems complying with BS EN ISO 9001: 2000 and the National Highways Sector Scheme 14 for the production and supply of bituminous materials, provide a high level of control over this element of our supply chain.
