Background to Formation of the Agency

In 2001 the Welsh Government (WG) reviewed the way that the Trunk Road and Motorways were managed in Wales.

A decision was reached in September 2004 to reduce the number of Managing Agents from eight to three. This resulted in new agency areas being formed for North, Mid and South Wales.

In October 2003 the eight local Authorities with existing agencies were invited to bid for the management of the new agency areas.

Neath Port Talbot CBC submitted a bid supported by an Alliance from both public and private sectors to manage the South Wales Agency and was announced as the successful preferred bidder in December 2004.

On 1st April 2006 the new South Wales Trunk Road Agent commenced the management of the trunk roads and motorways in the South Wales Area for an initial period of 5 years.
